After breakfast (with omelett with ham and cheese
being the special) we took off for a long daily ride, our longest one so far, we
were gone for about 8 hours overall. Our ride took us to the mountains, we rode
into a valley, then through a little mountain town called "San Miguel", where we
also made our first pause for drinking. It was very hot today, probably the
hottest day so far (which wasn't that bad though, since a swimming break was
planned for todays ride anyway Winking We all had brought our bikinis with us)

After some more riding through the valley, we
arrived at our lunch and swimming break place, a very nice part of the valley,
surrounded by mountains and with a small river running through it. We prepared
our picnic (properly with rugs sandwiches and bottles of hibiscus water - a
drink we always got at the ranch in addition to pure water, a very interesting
taste - that we had brought in pack bags on the horses) nearby a little tarn, in
which we also went swimming after lunch.
´

After resting for about 2 hours (and after having

dried again Winking ), we continued for our ride home, this time we went more
straightly up one of the mountains that was surrounding us, climbing over a lot
of rocks again. On the way home we came by a small town with a very interesting
looking pink church. There we also stopped for another drinking pause (everybody
drinking the usual choice of coke, water or beer :-P).

Dinner this day was special, it was "La Noche
Mexicana rosa", which meant not only the usual great food, but also live music
(a local singer singing Mexican folk songs) and dancing performances. Also we
got even one course more than usually (which meant being even more stuffed than
usually *eek*). We first got a gazpache made of beetroot, vegetables and lots of
chili (a cold hot soup therefor :-P), I loved it, followed by shrimps with
garlic and chili and as a main dish chicken, beef, paprica and tortillas and
finally vanilla ice cream with wild berries.

We took the dessert outside in the patio, because
we were going watch the dancing performances, which consisted of Lallo and
Rosalda showing Mexican folk and step dances, it was very cool! Later in the
evening we danced ourselves, had some more drinks, t
his night we definitely broke our record for staying up late, we managed
until 23:45 :P (and we still got up at 7am the next morning).

On Friday we went to the market in Jilotepec for
shopping in the morning. We only had coffee at the ranch, but stopped for
breakfast at a small food stand next to the road on the way to
Jilotepec, where the workers of a nearby factory usually stop for breakfast.
There we got some hot "roll" made out of a corn based dough, filled with
chicken. It tasted well, but was very stuffing (which is probably the purpose of
such a breakfast). With it we got some interesting kind of hot chocolate, which
was very viscous and was more like a hot and fluid chocolate pudding than a hot
chocolate (the same drink alternatively was available with strawberry taste).

After the breakfast we continued the drive to the
market. At the market we first looked at some stands that sold western riding
equipment and Susi and I both bought miniature Mexican riding horsewhips (to
hang in the car as decoration Winking ). Generally the market in Jilotepec sells a
mix of food (most standing out: huge plates of bacon rind :shuffle: and lots of
chili), household articles, clothes and shoes (and a little bit of everything
else, but the beforementioned stuff was the most common). Also they had tons of
riding boots and western hats. I ended up buying two shirts, a "Hello Kitty" one
Big Grin and a light green one.

Back at the ranch, it was time for lunch again, we
got Borritos and as dessert banana split ice cream. It was very yummy, but we
all were more or less still stuffed from the breakfast

In the afternoon, we did a 3 hours ride onto
another hill. It was very hot that day and Troja was pretty lazy this time, but
it still was a very enjoyable ride and the look down from the hill was as always
very beautiful. The only problem was that Susi started feeling somewhat sick
during the ride, she wasn't quite sure whether it was the breakfast, the
coconuts she had bought at the market or whether she had just overeaten herself
in general, cause she had eaten lunch, even though she wasn't even the least bit
hungry again. She later decided that the last alternative was the most likely
one :-P So she changed horses for the way back home (she had Amigo, a very
nervous and mercurial horse, who was not exactly relaxing to ride, so she felt
more comfortable riding home on Tabacco, who is a very calm horse).

For dinner that day we had a Shrimps cocktail with
a hot sauce (wheeee, Shrimps!), followed by filled paprika in a dough crust and
as a dessert, strawberry mousse. Susi skipped dinner and went to bed early in
the hope that she would feel fine again the next morning (but unfortunately it
took her one more day to recover).

Thursday, May 31st

On Thursday we had pancakes with maple sirup for
breakfast. I had eaten this once when I was in the US and found the maple sirup
very yucky back then, but surprisingly the one we got this time was very nice,
much sweeter.

Today I got a new horse (Troja had to have his lost
horseshoes replaced), Sultan. Sultan is the leader of the horse herd (even if
watching the herd occasionally we had the impression that Amigo, a small horse
that we got to ride later, at least has some ambitions to challenge Sultan for
the position) and liked to remind the other horses of it during the rides,
by pinching them into the behind Winking and by always wanting to ride in front. He
tried the same with the dogs, which didn't convince them to stay away from him
though. Sultan was a very comfortable to sit horse and a very energetic and
lively one, I enjoyed riding him a lot. He also was Klaus' favorite horse the
last time he was in Mexico, but he had been having back problems lately and
therefor was only used for light people and also only in a limited
way.

Today we did a 3 and 1/2 hours ride onto the nearby
mountain/hill. We climbed our way up the hill over stones and between bushes. On
top there was a rather big meadow, that we used for a nice gallop. The view over
the Mexican highlands was very beautiful from the top of the hill and it was
also the first time we really saw how mountainous the area around the ranch
really is. They way back down over the stony ground was even more shaky than the
way up, but a lot of fun.

For lunch we had Enchiladas with chicken and Tomato
salad and as dessert a very pink cake with citron taste (pastry in very flashy
colors seem to be very popular in Mexico - just as houses in very flashy colors
Winking ).

Today was also the first time we went somewhere
without horses Winking We took a drive with the car to Tula, a town about a 30
minutes drive from the ranch, where some ancient Toltec pyramids and excavations
can be seen. Instead of driving inside the car, we got to sit on the back at the
cargo area, which was a lot of fun (even if very windy :-P).

Klaus, Susi and I went to look at the pyramids,
while Moni went shopping with Uschi (the ranch owner), since she already had
seen the pyramids the last time Klaus and she were in Mexico and didn't feel
like going there again. We first looked at the museum and then walked to the
pyramids, past some souvenir stands, where I bought a postcard (the only time we
were somewhere where they had any at all) and a pair of pretty open shoes (I
mainly bought them cause I had brought too little shoes to Mexico *drama* ).

We climbed to the top of the one still complete
pyramid, on top of which Susi got a bit of an vertigo attack (the pyramid was
actually not that high, but open to all sides and of course there were no rails
with the steps to the top). But after some taking herself together she managed
to climb back down, with the help of Klaus. She was pretty convinced that she wouldn't have gotten down again if she had been on her own though :shuffle:

Afterwards we were picked up again and went to the
inner city for some shopping. First we went to a western riding shop, where
Klaus bought a western shirt and a knot halter for his horse at home. They had
some very cool miniature western saddles, with all the details of a real one
(they of course had very cool real ones as well Winking ), but they were very
expensive and I was afraid to run out of Pesos, so I didn't buy
one.

Afterwards we went shopping for clothes and
accessoires. I liked the inner city of Tula, it was quite pretty and very
lively. i bought two hairbands and a beautiful handbag, while the others mostly
bought clothes.

For dinner we had cauliflower soup, followed by
chicken with chocolate-chili sauce and pasta and ice cream (and a Margherita Winking
) for the dessert.

Wednesday 30th

Photos:

http://s151.photobucket.com/albums/s123/LitlaGletta/Mexico/Mexico%20-%20Day%204/

Wednesday was the first day when I was able to
sleep "longer", till 7am :P

This morning we had a very yummy breakfast special,
toast with ham, cheese, egg and hot salsa.

We did another 4 hours ride, this time we crossed
some railways (Susi said it would have been more exciting if a train had been
coming :-P) to a small village on top of a hill. We saw some beautiful flowers
in the gardens on the way up to the village. In the village we as usually
stopped at a small store to have some water or coke (or a cerveza, if wanted Winking
). We always found it interesting to check out which candy

is popular in Mexico, which of it is the same as in
Germany and what are things that we can't get here. The most interesting candy
we saw were some chili-flavored/covered long sticks, even though none of us actually dared to try them :-P

I again was riding Troja
and we were accompanied by Choki and Antonio's German shephard again. On the way
back Klaus tried to take gallop photos (we had to gallop past him), but it
wasn't all that successful, cause half of the horses didn't see the point of
galloping by a waiting horse and prefered to slow down as soon as we approached
him with his camera :-P

Back at the ranch, we got Nachos with a very hot

tomato salad and then an interesting "casserole" made out of rice, corn, other
vegetables and sour cream", followed by some ice cream with ananas.

In the evening we did another shorter 90 minutes
ride, to a tree upon a hill, from which it was possible to have a very nice look
over the landscape near the ranch. We also did a very fast gallop during that
ride, during which Troja lost two horseshoes. On the way back to the ranch we
climbed over a lot of stones near the waterfalls (I was glad that Troja was so
sure-footed even with the two lost shoes).

For dinner we had a cream soup, followed by chicken
with Mango-sauce and a Mango-creme with cookies for dessert. As always we ended
the evening with a cocktail, in my case a Pina Colada.

Tuesday, May 29th

On Tuesday I got a new horse, Troja, a strong dark
chestnut colored horse. This time we only were accompanied by one dog, Choki (he's
probably convinced it's his "work" to accompany his herd of horses Winking ). This time
we took a beautiful route around a big mountain near the ranch, climbing along
rocks and between bushes and trees, landscape wise it was the most interesting
ride so far. We also did a long gallop during which we gallopped into the wrong
direction, which we only noticed when we saw our guide several hundred meters to
the right of us.

The goal of our ride was a city called San
Francisco (not quite as big as its Us American counterpart and no ocean or
bridges Winking , but still an a bit bigger town than the villages near the ranch).
There we had a rest at a huge tree that had some sort of shrine built into it
and afterwards we stopped at a local small restaurant (that claimed to be able
to serve between 500 and 5000 people on a sign on the outside :P ) and had lunch
there.

I noticed that the bathroom next to the restaurant
had a huge beautifully designed ceramic sign above the door on the outside that said
"Please wash your hands after using the toilet" ).

For lunch we got a hot tomato salad, some sort of
dough with sour cream on it (reminded me a bit of Hungarian Langos), some filled
rolled dough (sort of like Chinese spring rolls) and tortillas with cheese,
salad and chicken, as always it was very yummy! And we got a dessert too:
turquoise blue "wobble pudding" (if someone in Germany cooked a Mexican meal and
ended it with that as a dessert, I bet all the German guests would complain that
this is not typically Mexican and doesn't fit with the rest :P )

The way back home was shorter than the first half
of the ride. In the evening, this time we had an extremely tasty Pina Colada and
then for dinner a Broccoli-Creme-soup and as the main dish a Green Salsa with
meat, vegetables and corn rice. Dessert was Lemon icecream with Tequila
Big Grin
